Updates from the Cantorial Search Committee
March 20, 2020
After many months of interviews and consideration, it is with a tremendous amount of pleasure and excitement that we share with you that the Cantorial Search Committee recommended the hiring of Cantor Joshua Finkel as our next cantor and the Board of Trustees overwhelmingly approved this hiring with the full support of our staff and Rabbi Ilana. Cantor Josh is as thrilled as we are.
Cantor Josh comes to us with over six years’ experience with the last three years as sole spiritual leader at Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community, St. Louis, MO. Cantor Josh received his undergraduate degree from Bard College and was ordained as Cantor with a Masters in Sacred Music from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Cantor Josh brings with him a huge heart, warmth, and kindness along with a beautiful voice and excellent guitar skills. He is truly a mensch who is a great fit for our sacred community. We are excited for him, his wife Emily, and their two young children to join us.
M’Chayil L’chayil, May we go from strength to strength.

It is an exciting time for the BHSS Cantorial Search committee. The committee has come together cohesively, openly sharing our opinions, truly being present and listening to each other’s point of view. We have received many resumes from an impressive group of candidates and are currently interviewing viable candidates via SKYPE. We have started to schedule in-person meetings as well, continuing the process with those we feel could be our next cantor.
During the in-person visits, the cantors are with us for a brief yet extremely busy period. The visits typically include an opportunity to meet individually with Rabbi Ilana and each staff member, a formal interview with the Search Committee, and a brief “audition.” Additionally, the cantor may be asked to conduct a learning session with groups of adult and/or youth learners.
If you have questions or thoughts please don’t hesitate to reach out us.

The search for a new cantor is a serious and holy endeavor. We are proud to represent BHSS as each and every one of us will be affected by its outcome. Our first effort in this process was to choose a diverse group of congregants who would join us as the search committee. We are pleased to announce that everyone has accepted this leadership role and understands the full commitment of this search. They are:
Dara Diamond, Eric Einhorn, Al Levene, Jackie Lowenfels, Al Schlosser, Tai Weiss and Kathy Zukof; ex officio members Rabbi Ilana Schwartzman, Director of Education Rebecca McVeigh, and BHSS president, Judy Teich
During our first meeting in December, the co-chairs entered into a covenant with our committee members. We are honored that the leaders and congregants of BHSS have trusted us with the sacred responsibility of searching for our next cantor. Our application has been submitted to the American Conference of Cantors (ACC) and the committee has started the search.
We will work for the sake of our BHSS community. We will only recommend to our congregation the candidates whom we support with our whole heart. We have big shoes to fill as Cantor Perper has led us so beautifully these past thirteen years. The mantra that “We Love Our Cantor” must ring true for his successor as well!
We are committed to keeping you informed of our progress in this search process. Please check back here for our updates.
Feel free to reach out to one of us at the email addresses below with questions, and thank you for the trust you have placed in our hands.
