June 2008

Beth Haverim Shir Shalom’s theme for this year will be Mitzvot.

In its strictest sense mitzvoth refers only to commandments instituted in the Torah: however we are using the more generic sense to include all of the laws, practices, and customs of Jewish law.

Mitvot will be a very broad theme used to include many aspects of our Temple life from prayer to learning to social action. We will incorporate this theme throughout our different committees as we learn, pray and socialize together.

The book “Jewish Living, a guide to contemporary reform practice” by Mark Washofsky will be the centerpiece for our Mitzvot theme.

This definitive guide for Reform Jewish practice is a complete source for those who wish to incorporate Jewish practice into their everyday life. Mark Washofsky, a highly respected professor at Hebrew Union College , leads the reader to an understanding of the whole of Jewish life-from blessings to bar/bat mitzvah, Havdalah to haftarah, and tikkun olam to tikkun Leil Shavuot. This user-friendly compendium for living a Jewish life is a wonderful tool for those seeking an understanding of current Reform Jewish practice.

Throughout the year the congregation will read different chapters of the book. The book will be used for various projects and events including peer group get togethers, monthly Friday night service discussions, and adult Ed and family learning programs. We are also finalizing plans for Mr. Washofsky to be our scholar in residence.

Over the summer please read chapter one. We will use this chapter as the basis for our “ Shabbat Unwrapped ” service on September 12. This service will be an introduction to our Synagogue and our service.

You will be hearing many more details on this throughout the year.

We look forward to your entire family taking part in our exciting new initiative.
